The beaches of Licata, Gela, Scoglitti were the first portions of Axis territory hit by the American army on the night of the 10 July, 1943. The landing marked the beginning of Operation Husky, codename for the invasion of Sicily. It was the first amphibious operation of WWII, larger than the landing in Normandy.
